This is where I intended to brag about being part of an incredible art show in Tucson, Arizona. You know, the kind of post where I link to the gallery’s website or Instagram page and let the visuals do the talking. Except... the gallery doesn’t have a website yet. Or an Instagram page. How do you brag about something that’s not really "present" on the internet? (so hard these days)
I decided instead to share what really matters: the people, the art, and the atmosphere of that night.
The show was curated by the incredible Paula Valencia, the force behind this new gallery in Tucson. She’s not new to the art world. Years ago, she co-ran Sacred Machine gallery with her former husband, Daniel Martin Diaz—a space that became legendary in the art community. Together, they were what people like to call a "power couple," though their work was more about deep, mystical creativity than flashy labels.
This new gallery feels like a continuation of Paula’s journey, and it’s beautiful to witness the energy she’s pouring into it. The artists in the show were phenomenal. I’ll admit, I was a little starstruck to be in such company.
As for the evening itself? I can tell you, without hard evidence, that it was wonderful. The creatures that travelled with me to the U.S found their forever homes. It felt surreal, watching them connect with people who truly "got" them.
The rest of the night was a blur of wine, conversations, and, of course, my ever-present social anxiety. (Will that ever go away? Or am I destined to become a slightly more anxious hermit as I age? Let’s hope not.) But despite the nerves, I loved it. Tucson has this warm, gritty magic about it, and the people there made me feel... seen.
Here are a few pictures and videos from the evening. Tucson, you were kind to me, and I can't wait to come back.
